Yasamin* (25) lives in northern Afghanistan with her husband and two daughters, Roya* (18 months) and Sara* (2.5). Yasamin’s younger sister Somaya*, often visits them and takes care of her nieces. Yasamin’s husband owns a car and uses it as a taxi, but it often breaks down and he makes very little income. He cannot work as a daily labourer as he has an injured hand, and they also have loans they struggle to repay. They eat rice when they can, but often have bread and tea if the car is broken or there’s no income. Roya, Sara and Yasamin have all suffered from malnutrition. Yasamin describes the distress and sadness she feels knowing they have all had malnutrition. After visiting Save the Children’s mobile clinic, Yasamin said she cried all the way home and was in a daze for days trying to process her situation and how she was going to help her daughters. Sara and Yasamin were treated as outpatients at Save the Children’s mobile clinic, but when Roya was seven months old, she was admitted to Save the Children’s Therapeutic Feeding Unit (TFU) because she had severe acute malnutrition and was vomiting uncontrollably. Yasamin’s younger sister Somaya* describes how she cried and prayed for Roya to get better, as she is very close to her younger cousins. Roya is now recovering from malnutrition, and still being treated at the mobile clinic. Yasamin describes how the doctors were kind, and how without the service, they wouldn’t have been able to help Roya get better.
